"Cultural Activities"

"Cultural Activities" or "bunka-katsudo" in Japanese is one of "Status of Residence" defined by Japanese immigration law.

Persons qualified for "Cultural Activities"
- unpaid researcher
- unpaid intern
- people studying arts and crafts peculiar to Japan such as tea ceremony or Japanese flower arrangement
etc.

This status is categorized into 4 areas.

	Academic activities that do not involve any income 収入を伴わない学術上の活動
	Artistic activities that do not involve any income 収入を伴わない芸術上の活動
	Pursuing specific studies on Japanese culture or arts 日本の文化または技芸について専門的な研究を行う活動
	Learning and acquiring Japanese culture or arts under the guidance of expert 日本の文化または技芸について専門家の指導を受けてこれを修得する活動

Spouse and Children
- a spouse of a person who is qualified for "Cultural Activities"
- a child of a person who is qualified for "Cultural Activities"
will be qualified for the status "Dependent".

本邦において行うことができる活動（出入国管理及び難民認定法　別表第一　三）

Academic or artistic activities that do not involve any income, or activities conducted to acquire culture or arts and crafts peculiar to Japan by conducting specialized research or through the guidance of experts (except for activities listed in the right-hand column of the "Student" through "Trainee" sections in the Appended Table (4)).

収入を伴わない学術上若しくは芸術上の活動又は我が国特有の文化若しくは技芸について専門的な研究を行い若しくは専門家の指導を受けてこれを修得する活動（四の表の留学の項から研修の項までの下欄に掲げる活動を除く。）

(i) Cases in which the foreign national seeks to engage in academic or artistic activities or to pursue exclusive studies on culture or crafts and arts peculiar to Japan:

一　学術上若しくは芸術上の活動を行い、又は我が国特有の文化若しくは技芸について専門的な研究を行おうとする場合

a. materials demonstrating the content and period of the activities and the overview of the organization in which the foreign national seeks to engage in the activities;

イ　活動の内容及び期間並びに当該活動を行おうとする機関の概要を明らかにする資料

b. document proving the foreign national's educational background, work history, and personal history pertaining to the activities;

ロ　学歴、職歴及び活動に係る経歴を証する文書

c. document proving the foreign national's ability to pay all the expenses during their stay in Japan;

ハ　在留中の一切の経費の支弁能力を証する文書

(ii) in cases where the foreign national seeks to learn and acquire culture or craft and arts peculiar to Japan under the guidance of experts: in addition to those listed in the preceding item, materials demonstrating the personal history and achievements of the experts.

二　専門家の指導を受けて我が国特有の文化又は技芸を修得しようとする場合　前号に掲げるもののほか、当該専門家の経歴及び業績を明らかにする資料
