Status for Family

To live with his/her family in Japan, a foreigner need to fulfill requirements of at least one of the "Status of Residence" defined by the Japanese immigration laws.

The following status are often considered as family visa because their requirements relate to applicant's family position, relationship, etc.


"Spouse or Child of Japanese national" u“ú–{l‚Ì”z‹ôŽÒ“™v is possible status for
- Husband of Japanese
- Wife of Japanese
- Person who was born as a child of Japanese
- Person who was adopted by Japanese based on Art. 817-2, Civil Code


"Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident" u‰iZŽÒ‚Ì”z‹ôŽÒ“™v is possible status for
- Husband of Permanent Resident or Special Permanent Resident
- Wife of Permanent Resident or Special Permanent Resident
- Person who was born in Japan as a child of Permanent Resident or Special Permanent Resident


"Dependent" u‰Æ‘°‘ØÝv is possible status for
- Husband
- Wife
- Child
of a person who is staying with "Professor", "Artist", "Religious Activities", "Journalist", "Business Manager", "Legal/Accounting Services", "Medical Services", "Researcher", "Instructor", "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services", "Intracompany Transferee", "Entertainer", "Skilled Labor", "Cultural Activities", or "College Student".


"Long Term Resident" u’èZŽÒv is sometimes considered as family visa. Definition of "Long Term Resident" is "Those who are authorized to reside in Japan with a designation of period of stay by the Minister of Justice in consideration of special circumstances." Circumstances largely vary.


"Permanent Resident" u‰iZŽÒv and "Special Permanent Resident" u“Á•Ê‰iZŽÒv are also considered as family related visa since many of their families reside in Japan. Permanent Residency status can be granted in Japan, not outside of Japan, that is, a foreigner need to spend some period under other status prior to its application.


Under the status of "Temporary Visitor"u’ZŠú‘ØÝv, a foreigner can temporarily visit Japan to see his/her family in Japan.


Employment related status such as "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services", "Artist", etc also make a foreigner stay legally in Japan, that is, he/she can live with his/her family together.
